The United Arab Emirates is a constitutional federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. The federation was formally established on 2 December 1971.
The UAE occupies an area of approximately 83,000 sq km along the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Accommodation
Residence Visa
If you are moving to the UAE and are not a GCC national, the first requirement is a residence visa. If you have secured a job, your employer will typically arrange your visa, which should be ready for stamping at the airport upon your arrival.
To bring your family members, you’ll need to apply for a family residence visa. This visa allows you to sponsor your spouse, children, and parents. There may be minimum salary requirements to qualify for sponsoring family members.
If you’re entering the UAE to seek employment, you will arrive on a visit visa. Once you secure a job, your visa can be converted to a residence visa either by re-entering the country or through an internal transfer.
Rentals and Property Prices in Dubai
Dubai offers a wide range of accommodation options, from apartments to villas, catering to different budgets. Rental prices vary depending on location, size, and amenities. On average, rental costs for a one-bedroom apartment in central areas such as Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina range from AED 70,000 to AED 120,000 annually. In more affordable locations like Jumeirah Village Circle or Al Nahda, rents can be lower, averaging between AED 40,000 and AED 70,000 per year.
For those looking to buy property, prices for apartments in popular areas like Dubai Marina or Business Bay typically range from AED 1.2 million to AED 2.5 million for a two-bedroom apartment. Villa prices in family-friendly neighbourhoods such as Arabian Ranches or Jumeirah Park can range from AED 3 million to AED 7 million, depending on size and location.

To get a residential telephone line, mobile SIM, or internet connection, visit an e& (formerly Etisalat), Du, or Virgin Mobile office with your passport, residence visa, and tenancy contract. Internet Access
e& and Du are the primary internet service providers in the UAE, offering a range of services, including fibre-optic broadband and mobile data packages. Websites in the UAE are subject to a government proxy that restricts access to content deemed inappropriate.
Water & Electricity
Utilities such as water and electricity are billed monthly based on consumption. Electricity in the UAE runs on 220/240 volts, so US appliances require an adapter. To connect utilities, bring your tenancy contract and a refundable deposit to your local provider. Bottled water is common, as only water in Abu Dhabi and Dubai is fully safe to drink.
TV & Satellite
For television, many residential buildings provide an antenna or satellite dish. You may need a decoder/receiver to connect the satellite dish to your TV.

Schools in Dubai
Due to the large expatriate population in Dubai, there are numerous primary and secondary schools to choose from, most of which are private and fee-paying. When enrolling your child in the UAE, there are a few important restrictions to be aware of. For instance, you cannot change your child’s school during the academic year unless special approval is granted by the Ministry of Education. This means it is important to select a school that will suit your child from the start. Additionally, if you move to Dubai on or after 1st May, you will need to wait until the next academic year, which begins in September, to enrol your child.
The UAE has a comprehensive network of government schools providing free primary and secondary education for UAE nationals. For expatriates, there are over 200 private foreign schools offering high-quality education. These schools follow various curriculums, including British, American, and others from countries such as India, Pakistan, Japan, and Germany. English is typically the primary language of instruction, though other languages are available depending on the school. French and German schools are located in neighbouring emirates.

Employment
Employment in the United Arab Emirates differs in several ways from other countries. One key difference is the absence of a minimum wage. As a result, unskilled labourers may work long hours, typically 8 to 12 hours per day, for around AED 30 (approximately USD 8), while skilled workers usually have fixed working hours and a fixed monthly salary. Salaries for skilled workers generally range from AED 2,000 (USD 548) to AED 4,000 (USD 1,096) per month. Unlike in some countries, jobs in the UAE typically do not offer hourly pay, nor is it common to receive wages on a weekly basis.
Key Employment Points
Visa Transfer
After securing employment, you must transfer your visa to the company you are working for. This does not apply to women sponsored by their husband or father. If you hold a visit visa, you may need to leave the country to switch to a work visa, although recent regulations may allow for an in-country transfer. If you already hold a work visa, you can transfer to another company within the same emirate with a no-objection letter from your previous employer. Moving to a company in a different emirate previously required leaving the country and facing a six-month ban, but this rule has likely been removed.
Working for Multiple Employers
You cannot work for more than one company unless your visa specifically permits it, which is rare. If you are caught working for another company without the appropriate visa, the company you are working for may be fined AED 10,000, and additional penalties could apply.
Passport Handling
Your employer does not have the legal right to keep your passport. If they request to hold your passport, you should refuse. If your employer already has your passport and refuses to return it, you may need to take legal action.
Non-Payment of Salary
If your employer delays your salary for several months, this could be a warning sign. Cases of employees going on strike over unpaid wages and eventually taking their employer to court are becoming more frequent. Legal action should be considered if salary payments are consistently delayed.
Family Sponsorship Visa
To sponsor your family for a visa, you must earn a salary of at least AED 4,000, and this amount must be reflected in your employment contract. Some companies inflate salaries on contracts to enable family visa sponsorship, but this practice is illegal.

Cinemas / Theaters
The cinema scene in the UAE has grown significantly since the release of Titanic in 1998, which sparked the expansion of local cinema distribution companies and the opening of larger theater halls. Today, you can enjoy the latest blockbuster films in English, Arabic, and Hindi across the country.
Hollywood movies are typically released in the UAE within 2 months of their US release, while Bollywood films arrive within a month of their release in India. Presently, the major cinema chains in the UAE are Vox Cinemas, Reel Cinemas, Novo Cinemas, and Cinemacity, spread across various emirates including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. Most cinemas now offer online booking, allowing you to reserve tickets in advance and collect them at least 30 minutes before the film starts.
Television, Satellite & Cable
Most local TV channels in the UAE are government-run, broadcast in Arabic, and feature few commercials. For English content, Dubai One (formerly One TV) is the primary option, offering a mix of entertainment, news, and shows. Other English-language channels are often part of satellite TV packages.
Due to the limited selection of local channels, many residents invest in satellite dishes and receivers to access a broader range of channels. A typical setup costs around AED 1,000 (USD 274). The most popular satellites in the UAE include Nilesat, Arabsat, Hotbird, and Asiasat, providing both free-to-air and paid TV channels. Additionally, satellite TV providers such as OSN (Showtime Arabia), beIN Sports, Pehla, and Star TV offer paid packages with a variety of entertainment, sports, and movie channels.
E-Vision by e& (formerly Etisalat) is the primary cable TV provider in the UAE, offering a combination of free satellite channels and paid packages. E-Vision provides multiple subscription plans tailored to different preferences.
